I have a masters in Ecology and 30 years experience working in nature conservation.
In 2000 I stopped off in the Falkland Islands on my way to Antarctica. A man there gave a lecture on global warming along the lines of Al Gore's 'man made catastrophe soon' scenario. At the end, he asked for questions, so I asked 'Where are we on the Milankovitch cycle?' he stared at me blankly for several seconds then said no more questions and walked out. This set off alarm bells in my head. He was speaking with confidence and certainty about the climate, yet he didn't know the basics.
In Antarctica speaking with one of the scientists working there, he told me that the peninsular was loosing ice, but the main bulk of the continent was getting colder and the ice was increasing. Overall Antarctica was roughly in ice mass balance.
Two years later I was in the Arctic in Northern Sweeden where a meteorologist told me the following exact quote " The contribution of human carbon emissions to global temperature lies in the second place of decimals of a degree centigrade, they may reinforce natural warming, or mitigate natural cooling by some fraction of a degree, but they are no the principle driving force. _________________ Your degree of certainty is a measure of your ignorance |
