Evolution
in the light of esoteric spirituality |
In The Beginning... Male and Female express the primary Polarization
of Reality into the universes Within and Without. Here are the primary
forms of the cosmos, Circular "female" Orbits around Axial
"male" Poles. In the opening verses of the Bible of the
Jews, Christians and people of Islam, it says: “The Elohim
created Humankind, Male and Female, in their own image and likeness”.
So Elohim is plural as well as sexual. Is it the Cosmic
Joker at work, that we now talk about the “Big Bang”
as the genesis of evolution, and the “Second Coming”
as the fulfilment of evolution?
Science sharpens the outer, material facets of understanding of
life on Earth, and the evidence for Life having developed over great
spans of time, and it shows evidence for Evolution in the development
of more and more complex, but still clearly related, species. However,
there is a notorious scarcity of "transition" stages,
and though the pattern of development is clear, the fossil record
is more like the record of successive "models",than a
mechanical progression of material complexification. It is as if
the real development has taken place invisibly in an intelligent
"mind" somewhere, and has simply left records of each
"production line version". However, unfortunately, and
strangely in defiance of true scientific openness, the "fundamentalist"
scientists who hold centre stage today are unwilling to face any
evidence that challenges the current notion of a physical basis
of evolution. "Fundamentalist” Creationism is a cry for
recognition of the spiritual that has been denied by orthodox Science.
But it too only presents a selective part of the evidence.
If we look at our own processes of development, whereby we turn
a "good idea" into a line of production prolific enough
to leave widespread records, we can see the process of evolution
at work. We can observe highly similar patterns of evolution again
and again in our creative endeavours, if we stop to observe. We
can recognize similar paramaters of Reality in every corner of our
lives. This evolution has only the tiniest link with "chance"
but it has a huge link with intelligence and intuition, and this
is the realm in which "survival of the fittest" is conceived
and experiences, only to be tested in the physical. Conception precedes
testing. An inner, invisible, supersensible process precedes the
outer evidence for such a process. We know this directly. We need
no external proof for this basic fact of reality. Why then should
such a total, universal, basic life process in our personal lives
be so utterly different from the working of Creation? Is it really
conceivable? This thought goes against all intuition and received
experience. What then has made it go forth as "Evolutionism?"
We need to explore the systematic way in which, over a considerable
period of history, we have increasingly neglected to observe and
trust our own creative processes, our own deepest links with meaningful
Reality. We have become unaware of the driving power of emotions.
Yet in being lost sight of, they have come to assert an even greater
hold, to the point of stranglehold when we talk about fundamentalisms.
Yet the inner worlds of emotions and thoughts can be seen, when
observed, to have important potential contributions to understanding
and development, and indeed to sanity and balance and Life itself.
Traditional Science has turned its back on our inner realities,
with disastrous consequences, and it is now taken prisoner by unbalanced
excesses of what are, hidden under the guise of "objectivity",
actually emotional points of view.
For this rejection of inner realities as "unscientific"
or beyond the realms of scientific endeavour and scientific method,
is an irrational and certainly an unscientific rejection. It happens
as an a priori rejection, that assumes it as so obvious as to need
to proof. Yet such action of assumption is not in accord with scientific
method. It does not even begin to test our own inner processes by
which the rejection is made. It is a rejection ruled by emotion
and prejudice, and this becomes very visible in the vitriol with
which those who challenge orthodoxy are so often treated. There
is actually plenty of evidence of Man in the fossil records, from
strata far, far earlier than those conventionally assigned to the
first appearance of Homo sapiens. But the whitewashing of evidence
has been thorough, anomalous museum pieces get hidden, challengers
get their funds cut, ridicule for "pseudoscience" is rife.
For evidence of this, one example is Forbidden
Archaeology by Michael Cremo. There are actually huge quantities
of evidence that challenge the dominant scientific paradigms, there
is a lot fairly easily available if one chooses to search. But such
evidence gets generally silenced (and this silencing itself gets
denied) by mainstream academia and society. Forbidden Archaeology
shows the silencing process at work.
Evolution:
Humankind Awakening
to the Holistic Vision |
I have stressed that if we are to truly understand Evolution and
Creation, we must pay careful attention to our own inner processes,
our own evolving creative processes, how they select and judge what
is "fit", how they work in our own inner lives as microcosms
of the Universe. We have an emotional need to explore Evolution
because we sense that we are intimately connected, we sense the
need to understand our own history, we want to explore our own sense
of purpose and meaning in life as somehow linked to the greater
picture of purpose and meaning.
But we need to be practical as well as sensitive and imaginative.
Traditionally these "male" and "female" domains
have been separated further and further to the point where today
there is a schism between "evolutionists" and "creationists".
Yet there are at the very least elements of both truth, goodness
and beauty on both sides - and we need all this. Why should it not
be possible for us to explore both together, to look for a synthesis
of the best of both, a "win-win" scenario? Would that
not be better than either partial picture? Is there not a chance
that we might discover precious new truths and wisdom right under
our noses, if only we look again, more carefully, paying attention
to both inner evidence and outer evidence. There is nothing inherently
wrong or inferior in either. Both have to do with Truth.
We have some pioneer giants to reckon with, who have already explored
this "both-and" "win-win" approach to evolution
and spirituality. They deserve to be studied and their essential
points grasped. Perhaps we can go further, perhaps we can help in
very context-sensitive ways to defuse the present schism.
Holistic pictures of evolution,
brought through by Rudolf Steiner and Teilhard de Chardin, are substantial
attempts to integrate the partial pictures. Steiner’s work
has great treasures still to be developed. Yet there are still more
“pieces of the jigsaw puzzle”. Francis Bacon’s
esoteric legacy. Elaine Morgan has material vital to our local understanding
how the evolution of human form is likely to have happened in Pleistocene
times, in Descent of Woman. Michael Cremo has formidable
evidence the scientists have avoided. This evidence points not only
to hidden, inner factors, but also to the suppression of challenging
external evidence and the possibility of a "seeding" process
of humankind (from the stars??) that caused tiny isolated pieces
of evidence to be left in the fossil records, indicating an ancient
time of preparation of the whole planet before it was able to hold
any substantial size of population from its own evolutionary development,
helped by "parental" beings from elsewhere. Are the Biblical
references to the "Elohim" our way of using words to cope
with experiences too extraordinary to be put fully into words at
all? The Lost Teachings
of Atlantis brings through some formidable esoteric clues.
Yet H... brings the most vital clues of all, to piece them together.
Man and Animal draws
on Steiner’s Anthroposophy to show the subtle but unmistakeable
differences in the morphology of humans compared with mammals, even
with the anthropoid apes. There is overwhelming evidence, even in
the physical, that humankind constitutes a separate “kingdom”
to the animal kingdom. But it needs the intuitive trusting and spiritual-scientific
knowledge of the prime reality of our inner experiences, and the
direct link from Spirit to the very forms evolved, eg why we refer
to “upright” as a soul quality as well as a physical
one.
H... can take us even further, still using “spiritual scientific
method” to read the book of Life. Women ovulate every month
which is far more often than even the higher primates. Why so uniquely
often? Why such a clear difference to the whole animal kingdom?
And why at the same rate as the moon cycle? There are other well-established
subtle links with the moon cycle, for instance the folk wisdom encapsulated
in the word "lunatic" but the lunar link is not negative
or pathological of itself. Female animals only come into
season and mate for producing offspring, whereas humans are capable
of touching something higher. There is evidence in the forms and
social habits of various monkey species, how H... itself came close,
but was not able to enter fully…
Apocalyptic
Vision - Ecological Breakdown
and Spiritual Breakthrough |
Today people are waking up to the perilous state that we have gotten
the planet into. Here I'm very concerned to see the roots,
as this is always such a help to find the clues for the way forward,
and as going back in history opens us up to the spiritual roots
and causes and solutions, which are key to all the rest. In 1981
I wrote the piece with this title, The
Apocalyptic Vision - Ecological Breakdown and Spiritual Breakthrough.
Since then, more and more people have been waking up. The
Celestine Prophecy, couched in the very readable, user-friendly
form of a novel, provides welcome parallel material to my own.
There is lots more.
Having a sense of History is an essential part of our individual
sense of identity and purpose. I grew up all unconsciously wrapped
in the best of the conventional paradigms of Science and the Judeo-Christian
heritage. Into this came the esoteric picture of significant but
very long planetary epochs, each lasting for the time it takes for
the Earth's axis to gyrate backwards through one-twelfth of the
heavenly circle, about 2160 years. This helps put Atlantis in context.
I have changed Steiner's picture slightly (see why in Millennium
Stargate).
Transitional last Age of Atlantis - Age of Leo c.10800 BC
"Ancient India" - Age of Cancer c.8640 BC
"Ancient Persia" - Age of Gemini c.6480 BC
"Ancient Egypt" - Age of Taurus c.4320 BC
"Ancient Israel" - Age of Aries c.2160 BC
"Christian Era" - Age of Pisces c.1 BC/AD
In 2450 BC, at the zenith of the ancient Egyptian epoch, the Pyramids
were completed. They were aligned with extraordinary precision to
a number of significant stars. That alignment lasted only for 100
years or so. For the first time since then, another extraordinary
series of star alignments has just moved into place. See The
Star Mirror for confirmation of this, exploration of mathematical
probability, and exploration of many more extraordinary alignments
operative today. There are very significant alignments not only
with the Great Pyramid but also with the most sacred points and
high mountains over the whole planet. The Great Eclipse of 1999
had many extraordinary "coincidences" attached. Scientific
astronomy itself is announcing serious shifts in the Solar System.
The evidence for extraterrestrials or ET's is going up, also the
quantity and quality of contacts with "star beings",UFO's,
crop circles etc. People are having extraordinary awakening experiences
everywhere.
2000 years ago at the time of Jesus, people were preparing to face
the "End of the Age" which is commonly mistranslated
from the Bible and misrepresented as "End of the World".
Once again, an increasing number of people feel that we stand at
the threshold of an important change of ages - however much most
people now avoid the unfortunately devalued phrase "the New
Age". I have done research which clarifies the understanding
of this phenomenon and the cosmic dating indications - see Millennium
Stargate. My work suggests that we are indeed at a cosmic
threshold, as The Star Mirror suggests, but that it is also the
threshold of a period of change from age to age, a period that was
anciently recognized and called "End Times".
It suggests that the so-called "New Age" is more properly
understood as the fruition of the "old age" which had
to happen before the real changes could begin, that everything is
linked to an amazing collection of pretty exact cosmic time markers,
and that the life of Jesus is woven into this pattern in a crucial
way regarding timing.
The present Change of Ages appears to be as critical as the one
six ages ago, c.10,700 BCE. That Change of Ages was so catastrophic,
so long ago, so intimately linked with the tradition of H... that
had to go "underground", and so little understood , that
perhaps this is why Atlantis is generally considered to be a fable
today. Paul la Violette's ground-breaking classic "Earth
Under Fire" shows extensive scientific and mythological
evidence for the ancient catastrophe, though he dismisses the notion
of Atlantis itself. His scepticism actually lends credence to his
evidence.
The year 2012 has long been regarded by the Mayan sacred tradition
as being of critical importance, and though many might think the
Mayan civilization is long extinct, the esoteric teachings have
actually been passed on, and their grasp of the mathematics of star
cycles is not only of great beauty and wisdom, but also was unequalled
by modern Science until recent times. Note Geoff Stray's book
and visit his website.
"Apocalypse" means literally a revelation, an opening-up,
an unfolding, and although it is associated with the extremely heavy
imagery in the last book of the Bible (Apocalypse or Book of Revelation)
and with the heavy aspects of today's global challenges, it has
also the meaning of "enlightenment" and positive opportunity
in the apparent darkness. For those interested in the work
to meet global challenges, see our sister website www.dragonflytrust.org.uk.
Christianity has lost sight of its esoteric origins which it needs
to rediscover to find the esoteric gateway to future evolution.
"Back To Basics" is always of vital importance at times
like now. Yet within its own records are hidden a profusion of esoteric
clues. The Book of Revelation is profoundly esoteric, as Rudolf
Steiner and others working from his inspiration recognized. In the
middle of an unstoppable torrent of dire images of destruction is
the most powerful moment of beauty: a woman "clothed with the
Sun, with the Moon at her feet and stars above her head" who
is in labour with child, and is being chased by a Dragon who "is
angry because he knows his time is up". Readers of "Hamlet's
Mill" will recognize the archetypal heavenly image associated
with the Change of the Ages. The Apocalypse ends in peace, with
a description of the "New Jerusalem" which has twelve
gates described as "pearls". This is not an accidental
phrase.
