Further loose ideas for building an Info Portal

Here is an early attempt to outline the info basis we need:

  • EDUCATION: online resources for education and training that are open to frequent updating.
  • Basic principles involved in building Community Resilience, Solidarity, and Support
  • Developing key "transition" skills. Encourage "future visioning" to look for positive but realistic solutions and ways forward, and to keep an ear to the ground for what is most needed. Build our awareness of the obstacles we are facing.
  • Facilitate a "Think tank" network, where top-down politics and grassroots-up can meet. We can all have bright ideas and we need them!! How to structure wiki-friendly "think tanks"?
  • "Snappy facts" regarding key issues like airplane contributions to global warming, facts that are both globally well-sourced and homely in portrayal.
  • Many ideas to "save the planet" may be more greenwashy and "feel-good" than really helpful to the planet or scientifically proven - especially notions that are put out by people and organizations motivated by profits: we need appropriate source references to give people an informed freedom of choice. It would be good to see the Ecologist turning its expertise into a wiki here.
  • FINANCE, LOGISTICS & COMMERCE: We need to be able to grasp the outlines of national, business, and regional budgets.
  • We need to measure our dependency on oil, and share our growing grasp of this in user-friendly ways.
  • We want to see a "TWIG" (Total World Impact Guide) rating on every product that every shop sells - especially the supermarkets. But this needs coordinated research to get it into simple, universal, usable form. This can then be the basis for eco-taxation. None of this inhibits freedom of choice.
  • We need to develop and maintain standards of ethical excellence for sustainability eg kitemarks, eco-taxation, regulations, local currency - all material appropriate for a wiki.
  • We need to develop integrated transport schemes that take all factors on board - people's present situations, the possibilities for transiting from cars to public transport and accessible shops, schools, etc, using public brainstorming and taxation as well as rationing to effect changeover with maximum "fair play"
  • NATIONAL & GLOBAL POLITICS: the Real News - helping people let go the sensation news and discern the slow news.
  • Oil Depletion Protocol and similar material.
  • What global citizenship means, and how each of us can - and should - develop our understanding  of citizenship.
  • Important Vision Statements eg the UN Declaration of Human Rights
  • HEALTH: We want a wiki source of home remedies and holistic medical knowledge. We need to outwit the big drug companies who are only in it for the money, and who prevent good, natural, friendly, local products and methods being developed. We need to help each other build locally sustainable "good health" patterns. Many of the useful tips are global in their relevance.
  • Help with issues of "burnout" and "spiritual emergency" following waking up to planetary crisis.
  • COMMUNITY & SOLIDARITY: We need to share resources like cars.
  • We often need information and support, to help us cope and change personally, inwardly, spiritually; guides on how to run good "wisdom circles" or "World Cafes" are part of our empowerment, and we may have neither the time nor the money to travel to join training courses.
  • Inclusion of spiritual material insofar as this is useful to our global awakening and development of responsibility, sensitivity, and the sense of sustainability. What part the religious organizations can play in support here.

As and when I feel my own ideas have concentrated enough clarity, I shall post the project around the Internet.

More thoughts collected over time:

Decline in general health of pets in the last 30 years Changes in healthy content of food in the last 30 years - vitamins, etc
Population management in the nicest way - but working Sustainability of fish in the seas
Tropical Forests sustainability; the present carbon emissions with slash-and-burn Effects of Climate Change eg esp.if the Gulf Stream goes down
Nuclear power issues - links with arms and weapons; disposal alternatives The role of spirituality and the responsibility of religions in helping the shift to planetary awareness
How oil usage affects every detail of our life - approaching the issue as one of addiction - using Twelve Steps Alternative Transport options via joined-up thinking
The effects of raising consciousness in improving our ability to cope with planetary changes The hidden disempowering effects of a "Litigation Culture" and "Nanny State" legislation
Hidden effects of high/excessive population and urbanization Simple ways to grasp basic global finances
